Estates
Bewitching landscapes, blue horizons
The Coste Ghirlanda Estate is situated in a valley in the centre of the island, its Zibibbo vineyards protected by the characteristic dry stone terracing. Looking out towards Sicily, the Montagnole Estate lies in a splendid nature reserve, with terraced vineyards sloping down towards the sea. Lastly, the Nikà Estate where extensive olive orchards and citrus groves merge into the Mediterranean shrub land and the sun sets in vermilion splendour over the coasts of Tunisia.
Look at the following pictures and lose yourselves in the enchantment of our estates.
The Coste Ghirlanda Estate
Enchantment and Silence
The Estate, blending naturally into a landscape dominated by expanses of terraced Zibibbo bush vines, extends for nearly sixty thousand square metres on the edge of the Plain of Ghirlanda in the centre of the island, where the valley slopes gently upwards… hence the Italian name Coste Ghirlanda.
On the Coste Estate we cultivate nearly ten thousand Zibibbo vines, some planted decades ago, which give a particular flavour to our wines. In addition to grapes, we grow several varieties of fruit trees and citrus trees on the estate where an orange grove, protected by an Arab garden built in traditional Pantellerian dry stone, fills the air with the scent of orange blossom.

White roofs
Among the vineyards we catch a glimpse of the white roofs of the dammusi, those ancient stone dwellings built by the island farmers, which tell the tales of the men who lived in them centuries before we did. Their small rooms with arched ceilings, called alcoves, welcomed bridal couples while the stone benches, called ducchène in Pantellerian dialect provided rest for the farmers after a hard day’s work in the fields.
In the centre of the Estate lies the Wine Laboratory, the heart of Coste Ghirlanda, where our products are born and tempt you to taste them. All around are ancient dammusi in which we welcome our guests. And lastly, make a stop at the Sales Outlet where you will find our wines, our small gourmet jars and other ideas… souvenirs of the Estate’s atmosphere to take away with you.
The Montagnole Estate
An oasis at dawn
The Montagnole Estate lies in that part of the island which faces East, nestling in a nature reserve of Mediterranean shrub land. It offers a spellbinding view over the sea towards the coasts of Sicily. Each morning, the golden glow of the dawn caresses the vineyards which slope down towards the sea and dries the salty dew on the vine leaves.
The Estate covers almost one hundred and fifty thousand square metres descending towards the sea with thirteen ancient dammusi in and around the vineyards. The Montagnole Project plans to restore these ancient rural homes while upholding the traditional life and building styles of the island and thus recreate the original atmosphere of this incomparable and still unspoiled area.

Douceur et saveur
On this Estate, we have left the nature reserve intact so the individual grapevines, struggling stoically among the stones, capture the sea breeze and produce fruit with a high sugar content and particularly intense flavours. At Montagnole we cultivate nearly twenty-five thousand vines, as well as capers, olives and fruit trees.
In Springtime, the blossoming lemon and peach trees create an unusual panorama along the terraced vineyards in the Reserve . Nearby we find other trees flowering in colourful profusion and plants typical of the Mediterranean shrub land: Broom, Blackberry bushes, Mastic bushes, Rock Rose, Phillyrea and many other species.
The Nikà Estate
Earth energy
The Nikà Estate is located in the South-west of the Island. On calm evenings you can admire the breathtaking African sunsets illuminating the coasts of Tunisia, The Estate contains a series of ancient dammusi in and around the fifty thousand square metres of Mediterranean shrub land, expanses of low-growing olive trees and small terraced vineyards overlooking the sea.
The Nikà Estate is a special place… a source of earth energy… it is said, in fact, that in ancient times there may have been a temple here. As we stroll among the century-old olive trees and fragrant citrus groves watching the sea disappear into the horizon, we perceive sensations of wellbeing and harmony.
Surrounded by prickly pears growing among the volcanic rocks, the dammusi of Nikà tell their time-old tales and stand guard over the two hundred or more olive trees scattered around the estate.

Dammusi

Il silenzio del bosco
This is the name of an ancient dammuso of compelling charm which dominates the highest part of the Estate. Here you can enjoy moments of complete repose listening to the silence of the woods caressed by the wind. The external architecture faithfully reveals its centuries-old history, while the interior has been carefully redesigned with details of modern elegance.
Silenzio del Bosco can comfortably accommodate four guests and is surrounded by ample outside space, where you can enjoy the landscape while relaxing in the shade of an old carob tree. In this dammuso you can share culinary experiences sheltered from the sun under the cannizzo, a typical Pantellerian terrace pergola.
You will be living an experience which takes you back to the origins of ancient tradition, in a unique context, surrounded by vineyards sweeping gently towards the woods and the mysterious silence of Pantellerian nights enhanced by breathtaking starlit skies.
La Viola del Pensiero
This tiny dammuso, named after the Pansy, from the French word for thought, houses two guests and looks over the Valley of Ghirlanda and whose view is finally lost in the sea beyond. Surrounded by expanses of Zibibbo graevines, La Viola del Pensiero provides ample space among the olive trees to cook outside and the palm-leaf pergolas or cannizi provide shade where you can relax after a day of intense activity.
The intimacy of the small rooms of this dammuso with its violet coloured walls, enhanced by the use of precious materials and objects together with the informal but attentive service paid to the wishes of its guests, will make your stay in this place a magical and unrepeatable experience.
Lying in the shade of a palm tree in the Arab garden, pervaded by the fragrance of orange blossom and jasmine, reading or just thinking, you can enjoy moments of peace and tranquillity far from the stress of your usual daily routine.

Dammuso dell'Amore
This ancient dammuso, carefully restored to respect the architectural traditions of Pantelleria, is found at the edge of the Coste Ghirlanda Estate, wedged in a rock wall from which its undulating rooftops seem to emerge. From here you have a spectacular view of the vineyards
Hidden among fruit trees and surrounded by an atmosphere of times gone by, this dammuso can accommodate two people inside an interior which we deliberately left unchanged. It inherits from its original rustic structure that magical atmosphere, albeit enriched with elements of contemporary furnishing which makes it… a small love-nest.
A delightful place isolated from the rest of the Estate, in the Dammuso dell’Amore where you can enjoy moments of absolute peace and tranquillity in an atmosphere permeated by the uncontaminated nature surrounding it.. At the end of the day, if you feel like meeting up with the Friends of Coste, the wooden pathways through the vineyards will lead you to the Laboratory where you can spend a pleasant evening in good company.
Land
Rugged terrain
Every day we work this difficult yet incomparable land, obstinate winegrowers challenging nature with respect and passion. We grow our Zibibbo and Grenache vines with heroic viticulture techniques and produce wines with extraordinary sensory properties.
The dry stone walls of Arab origin, which make the landscape on the Island of Pantelleria so distinctive, were built over the centuries by the farmers to free the fields from stones, thereby creating greater freedom for the plant roots to survive. In this way they also set the boundaries of the land by dividing them into small matarrette.
Zibibbo
Sweet and Sun-ripe
Zibibbo, a word for some deriving from the African word zabib (golden raisins) and for others from the Egyptian town of El Zibib, is the name used on the Island of Pantelleria to indicate the variety of muscat grape which originally came from the ancient city of Alexandria. This variety of vine found particularly suitable growing conditions here producing grapes with high sugar content.
The Zibibbo vines, cultivated as low broad bushes, plant their roots into terraces excavated from the volcanic soil and lie in small hollows, allowing them to trap and retain the humidity of the night and find protection from wind and sun. The planting density is 1.5 x 2 m. The trunk is about 10 cm high and bears 4-10 long arms, pruned very short leaving only the head buds so that the Zibibbo always produces two clusters on the shoots growing from the head buds and the latent buds.

Ancient roots
It was the Phoenicians who first introduced the Zibibbo plant to the Island of Pantelleria where it firmly established its roots. Here it found its ideal habitat producing a wine with a distinctive aroma and unmistakeable fragrance. The Zibibbo plant’s leaves are medium in size and the clusters are large and elongated. The grape is plump, oval-shaped, greenish-yellow with a thick skin and has a Muscat flavoured pulp with presence of vine seeds.
Bacchus, Deity of the Harvest
The Zibibbo grape-picking is done exclusively by hand in the second half of August… and these are festive days. Only the very best bunches are selected to guarantee excellent results. Although regulations allow a production of up to 8000 kg per ten thousand sq.m., our cultivation is much more restricted in order to achieve the best possible yield results from the harvest.

Grenache
Probably of Spanish origin, Grenache is a grape variety famous in the south of France. It is widely planted and for this reason also called the queen of Mediterranean grapes. Grenache is a sturdy, upright vine with small production and low yield and is ideally suited to our stony and arid terrain overlooking the sea. Grenache is spicy, with aromas of pepper, evolutionary balsamic notes and great adaptability and longevity.
We will be making our first red wine with Grenache.
Pantellerian olive trees
The Pantellerian olive trees are carefully pruned to be low-growing as protection against the buffeting winds. This encourages them to grow in breadth reaching diameters of over ten metres… natural sculptures shaped by time, true protagonists of the Pantellerian landscape.
Taking care of olive trees on Pantelleria is truly an art. Moreover, it is impossible to use any kind of mechanical equipment or machinery to facilitate the olive harvest. Therefore only undamaged olives at the right stage of ripeness are selected and hand-picked, protecting the plants and the olives from even the slightest invasive action.

Capers
Caper plants are typical of the Mediterranean flora with fleshy, dark green leaves and very striking flowers, whose white and pink colours have purple reflections. The plants begin blossoming between May and September and it is then that the tender new capers are picked just before they turn into flowers.
Every morning just after dawn, to avoid the torrid heat of the island, the tiring caper harvest begins. Bent for hours over the low-lying plants, we only pick the smallest capers to guarantee the highest possible quality of the final product… and their preservation in Sicilian sea salt enhances their flavour.
Oranges
Sicilian oranges are renowned worldwide as an emblem of the typical tastes and flavours of this land. There is a small orange grove on the Coste Ghirlanda Estate where you can stroll among the fragrant orange blossoms inside an Arab garden with its traditional dry stone walls built to protect the trees from the wind.
The orange trees begin to produce abundant fruit from November onwards and present us with a spectacle which never fails to enchant. We use our oranges to make a marmalade which succeeds in capturing all the delicate fragrance and flavour of this fruit in a small glass jar… evoking the atmosphere of Sicily as it once was.

Wines
And there is always a new emotion
This is the phrase which most clearly defines our reality. Nowhere does the heat of the sun, the sea breeze and the rare rainfalls influence each season’s flavours and aromas like they do here. For this reason the fruit is never the same in any one year, but will tell the tale of a specific year in the life of the Island.
That is why with every taste… there is a new emotion.

Jardinu
The courage of the vines of this arid but marvelous land. The silence of the woods moved by the wind.
U Jardinu is a typical Pantellerian construction built by the islanders in lava-stone to protect the citrus trees from the wind – even just one tree – and allow the fruit to retain each drop of dew from the night. In this bottle, we intend to capture the fragrances and aromas of the Zibibbo grapes selected from our vineyards.
Golden, crystal clear, magnificently aromatic in proposing reminiscences of yellow peaches and citrus fruits, this wine gratifies the taste buds with a fresh and zesty flavour and exhilarating nuances of volcanic minerals
Silenzio
On this island ravaged by the wind, silence envelops you and the sky seems vaster at night.
Pantelleria is an island of contrasts, whose volcanic origins make a unique and profound impact on the flavours of this land. But it is the silence which is perhaps the most striking aspect. Fall under the spell of this wine and Pantelleria’s silence.
Straw coloured, golden with greenish hues, this drink brings intense aromas with hints of flowers and plants on a light citrus cedar background. Its perfectly balanced structure creates a marvellous taste, which leaves a pleasant floral after tone.

Alcova
The view beyond the vineyards where sea and sky converge. Incredible colours among endless silences.
In the ancient dammusi the alcove, from the Arabic al-qubba, was a low recess with an arched ceiling with sufficient space only for a bed and for this reason considered a love-nest. Alcove is a word of infinite grace discreetly denoting the use of architectural elements to separate and protect the intimacy of love. An intimacy which we discover in the taste and sensations of this sweet wine obtained from the Zibibbo grapes dried in the sunshine of Pantelleria.
It presents us with an intense dried fruit aroma. In the pleasant aromatic aftertaste balance is shared with the right dose of saltiness. Alcova is an excellent wine for reflection which we love to serve as an aperitif.
Grappa di passito
The Vinacce from grapes dried in the sun. Tender surprises of aromatic nuances.
Discover the flavours and fragrances of the Passito di Pantelleria in an aromatic grappa obtained from the distillation of vinacce from the winemaking process.
It is said that grappa expresses a certain femininity through that warm, intense and sensual character which distinguishes it… It is for this reason that it is easy to abandon yourself to the warm embrace of this distilled spirit and be fascinated by its golden reflections.

La nostra prima volta
Lanostraprimavolta is for us a little bit of magic, which allows us to savour once again, in the fragrance of this wine, all our passion and love for each single bunch of Zibibbo grapes grown on our Estate.
It dons a golden mantel. In elegant succession, notes of citrus juices, apricots, blossoming wisteria and Mediterranean shrubs parade past our noses with an echoing crescendo of saltwater and island minerals. The high aromatic quality gives brio to a structure balanced between a warm alcoholic embrace and a subtle dose of acidity with a pleasant salty-flowery aftertaste.
And the newborns of Coste...
Ghirlanda Rosso
Beyond dark stones, the sea hides within the sky and amongst the leaves, whilst sun-drenched grapes rest waiting for the harvest.
Agriculture is a heroic endeavour on the island of Pantelleria, the Montagnole Estate must be recognized as its pinnacle. The Estate’s Grenache stem from the tenacity and perseverance of those of us who dared challenge nature.
Ruby red with a tendency to lighten with aging in the bottle towards elegant garnet tones. Scents of sweet and ripe fruit, marasca and morello cherry are combined with and complement refined hints of sweet Mediterranean spices. A wine with a strong and structured character, a thick and round tannin and a balanced acidity that lengthens its final persistence.

Talé
Here I am; trust me to surprise you with my profound essence.
Everything about this wine is meant to amaze, from its colour to its intense aroma. Each sip expresses the tenacity of Grenache grapes grown on the Montagnole Estate. Abandon yourself without resistance to experience their enchantment.
Ruby red with a tendency to lighten with aging in the bottle towards elegant garnet tones. Sweet and intense fragrances, recall scents of wild rose and elegant aromas of small red berry fruits. With a full, broad taste and sweet and elegant tannin, each sip of this nectar entices the next.
Rifulìa
African sirocco, dolce far niente on the terrace, a summer breeze. Light thoughts carried far away.
In Pantelleria the wind blows constantly, often creating small whirlwinds locally called rifuliate. Indulge yourself in the emotions and scents of our Rosé wine and let your thoughts blow away with the wind.
The pale pink colour of the first months of life tends to veer, with aging in the bottle, and fades towards orange shades. During tasting it presents itself as fresh and delicate, floral from elderberry and anise flowers and slender in taste and with a good structure, whilst the never exuberant acidity accompanies and reinforces its sapid and mineral sensations.

Our products

Our products
Daily toils, passionate gestures, unusual flavours.
Coste’s capers, marmalades and jams… year in year out we interpret the produce which the island grants us in order to discover new tastes and sensations… which we translate to the flavours of our patés, sauces, pesto… and other delicacies, spicy or mild, and conceal in small precious jars.
Coste Olive Oil
Mediterranean character. Centuries old olive tree asleep among the stones. The taste, slightly bitter and slightly peppery, of fruit grown close to the sea.
The Coste Olive Oil is special… emblematic of a wild terrain worked heroically, the fruit of ancient rituals, those painstaking efforts of hand-picking each single olive still hidden among the olive branches lying flat on the ground.
Originating from the Monocultivar Biancolilla olive variety, our oil has a very delicate flavour with intense aromas. The olives are pressed the same day they are harvested, in conformity with all the relevant regulations and quality standards for achieving a superior Extra Virgin olive oil.
